Early Life
Milton James Randall was born on November 10, 1958, in Killarney, Manitoba. He attended Killarney Collegiate Institute. He began performing professionally at age 13, playing drums for socials and weddings.
He later lived in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Education
Milton pursued extensive formal training in music and education:
- Bachelor of Music Education, University of Texas at El Paso (Class of 1985)
- Graduate studies in percussion, University of Arizona (1985–1987)
- Master of Music Education, University of North Texas (Class of 1995), with additional studies in Educational Administration and Supervision
- Ph.D. coursework in Music Education, University of British Columbia (1995–1999)
Although he completed doctoral coursework at UBC, he placed his graduate studies on hold to focus on performance and workshop leadership.
Drumming Workshops and Educational Outreach
From 2001 to 2014, Milton led Afro-Brazilian and hand drumming workshops in more than 1,000 schools across British Columbia, Alberta, the United States, and Hong Kong. His programs emphasized participation, ensemble coordination, and accessible rhythm structures for large groups.
Over the course of his career, he introduced an estimated 450,000 students to hand drumming.
He also provided professional development workshops for teachers, helping schools establish sustainable drumming programs. His workshop appearances included events such as:

- Alberta Music Teachers’ Conference

Business and Entrepreneurship
Randall served as President of Groove Masters Percussion, a company focused on percussion instruments, educational resources, and workshop facilitation.
In August 2019, he acquired The Empire Music Company, expanding his involvement in music retail and distribution.
He also developed and patented several percussion instruments under the GMP AirDrum line, including:
- GMP AirDrum Stackable Tubolo
- GMP AirDrum Tuneable Tubolo
- GMP AirDrum Rope-Tune Djembe
- GMP AirDrum Tuneable Djembe
- GMP AirDrum Nesting Djembes
- Composite Napa Pop-Head Cajon
These designs focused on durability, stackability, classroom practicality, and ease of maintenance.
Publications
Milton authored three instructional books:
- Hand Drumming: Getting Started
- Drumming Math: Multiplication
- Hand Drumming: Getting Serious
His publications combined rhythm pedagogy with structured lesson sequencing, often integrating mathematical and ensemble concepts.
Personal Life
Milton married Mayumi on March 29, 1988. They remained married for 36 years. Together they had three children.
Milton died on September 1, 2024, at Richmond Hospital in British Columbia following a three-year battle with cancer. He was surrounded by family at the time of his death.
Legacy
Milton James Randall is remembered for expanding access to hand drumming in schools, developing scalable percussion programs, mentoring educators, and designing practical classroom percussion instruments. His work influenced music education communities across Canada and beyond.
