About Dartagnan Camara

Dartagnan Camara is a leading Guinean percussionist and educator, recognized among the top of the new generation of djembe players. This is his only Canadian teaching stop on his world tour.

Workshops & Levels

Mix and match sessions to fit your schedule. Options are available for beginner, intermediate, and advanced players.

  • Djembe: hand technique, sound, and ensemble role
  • Dununs: kenkeni, sangban, dundunba with sticks
  • Krin: slit-log drums in multiple sizes
  • Balafon: traditional xylophone with gourd resonators
  • Dunun Dance: drumming while moving

Drums provided. Djembe rentals available: $10/day. If unsure of your level, please confirm before registering.

Schedule Blocks

  • Weekend #1: Dec 5–7, 2025
  • Weeknights: Dec 8–11, 2025

Getting There

Venue: UVic School of Music, MacLaurin A-Wing (A166, A169) and B-Wing (B016), off Parking Lot “E”. Look for the tall white Drum Van near the entrance.

  • Parking: Free on Sundays and official holidays
  • Transit: Frequent bus service stops next to the School of Music
  • Accommodations: Wide range available in Victoria (Airbnb, hostels, hotels)
  • Dining: On-campus options and nearby Cadboro Bay Village / Shelbourne

What to Bring

  • Optional device for recording rhythms at designated times
  • Water and snacks for breaks
